Is 4K TV good for PS5? | Top 6 4K/120Hz TVs for PS5

Since the time of its inception, PS5 has screamed ‘Experience’.

While there is criticism of everything and as it should, rarely do I find a gaming unit receiving accolades as PS5 did.

Unfortunately, the lack of units in the market owing to GPU shortage has rendered people not being able to experience this fantastic gaming machine.

For people who have actually managed to snag one of these bad boys, the next question that stands is,

Is 4K TV good for PS5?

A good 4K TV is not only good but also highly recommended for a PS5. The inherent PS5 hardware is capable of running games at 4K resolution with high dynamic range and variable refresh rates. Therefore, getting a 4K TV will ensure that you will be able to extract the best out of your PS5.

Now, of course, things aren’t as simple as going to a store and getting the first 4K TV you can find.

So, in the subsequent sections of the article, you will find the best 4K TV for PS5 that checks all relevant factors.

Additionally, the content ahead will answer similar questions around the topic like the best resolution to game on (1080p or 4K), what kind of TV should you get for a PS5, and what TV size is the best for PS5.

What kind of TV does one need for a PS5?

To be honest with you, any TV with a minimum resolution of 720p and an HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 port will work with a PS5.

But that kind of display isn’t what PS5 is designed to drive.

Resolutions that a PS5 is capable to drive are 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 1440p, 4K, and even 8K.

While all of us know and love 1080p, 1080i resolution will render some of you scratching your heads.

1080i is different from 1080p in the sense that it scans images in an interlaced fashion.

The odd and even pixel rows are illuminated at the rate of 30 fields per second.

In 1080p, the scans happen progressively, where each row is refreshed 60 times per second.

The visual quality isn’t too different, and therefore the visual fidelity won’t see an impact should you choose either of the two.

So, yeah, your current TV may be able to run along with your PS5, if you are looking to get the maximum out of your tech, 4K is where it is at.

Native 4K at 120fps is kind of the tagline for PS5 this time around.

Add to that ray tracing, ultra-fast loading times, and a line of exclusive games and you are looking at a true gaming experience of the highest order.

To extract the best possible performance and experience out of your PS5, you need to be looking at 4K TVs with HDMI 2.1 capabilities.

HDMI 2.1 is the latest upgrade to the HDMI connection that makes 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz possible.

In the subsequent sections let’s look at the best 4K TV for PS5 you can look into getting straight away.

If you are looking for a no-compromise ideal TV to just get going with your PS5, you cannot go wrong with the LG Class C2 OLED EVO.

Now there are many options that share the same features as this TV but they exude exorbitant prices.

The pricing of the TV isn’t humble by any means but for the feature and the quality, you will find TVs at much higher price points than this.

The TV combines a whole bunch of features with the brilliance of a 4K OLED display.

The features that stand out are low latency, variable refresh rate, and gaming-oriented software design.

The TV features four HDMI 2.1 ports with 120Hz refresh rate, G-Sync, and AMD freesync.

Combine that with HDR gaming(with game optimizer), and second to none OLED display and you have a high-quality, finely-tuned gaming beast.

Another excellent feature that is often overlooked is the presence of an AI processor.

The processor will upscale content to 4K if the content you are consuming is lacking in resolution.

You will be hard-pressed to find a TV that packs in as many features as the QN90B given the price.

The 65-inch 4K TV boats NEO QLED which make use of tiny Quantum Mini LEDs that relay their own light to create the TV’s backlight.

Looking from the gaming perspective the TV is capable of taking on the most graphic-intensive games.

It doesn’t contain a DisplayPort but that shouldn’t be an issue given we only need an HDMI 2.1 port.

The TV has 4 HDMI ports all capable of 4K/120 Hz response rate.

The perfect alternative to C2 if for some reason you aren’t ready to pay as much.

3. Sony 65’’ X90K

Pros
  • Incredible contrast ratio
  • One of the best SDR peak brightness in a TV
  • Clean, bright, and crisp display quality
  • Good UI with Google TV smart platform.
Cons
  • Minute blooming around bright objects
  • The viewing angle is comparatively narrow

Now I know the options that we have discussed thus far have the capacity to be a little heavy on the wallet.

But you don’t need to spend as much to have an incredible gaming experience.

That’s where options like the X90K come into play.

The TV packs in all the necessary features required to make an incredible machine to game on.

The 65’’ display works on Sony’s XR processing technology. The full array LED display is bright, colorful and produces a natural stunning picture.

Yes, the HDR isn’t nearly as striking as the OLED display, still the X90K is capable of providing a buttery smooth 4K 120Hz gaming experience.

4. TCL 55″ Class 6-Series

Best Budget 4K 120Hz TV for PS5

TCL 55" Class 6-Series 4K Mini-LED UHD QLED Dolby Vision HDR Smart Google TV - 55R646, Black
  • Superior 4K Ultra HD: Picture clarity combined with the contrast, color, and detail of Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the most lifelike picture.Controller type:Remote Control, Voice Control
  • Mini-LED Technology: Uncompromised contrast, brightness, and uniformity for incredible viewing in any environment. Mini-LED backlight technology bring exceptionally powerful and precise control of brilliantly bright and deeply dark areas of the image, delivering unparalleled depth and dimension.
  • QLED: Quantum dot technology delivers more than a billion colors with greater accuracy, better brightness, and wider color volume, matching the format used by most cinema screens and Hollywood content creators. This provides exceptionally vivid and lifelike picture performance.
  • Contrast Control Zones: Contrast is optimized across up to 240 localized zones for striking distinction between bright and dark areas of the image for maximum detail, depth, and dimension.
  • Hands-free Voice Control: Easy home control and entertainment, without lifting a finger. Turn on the big game. Dim the lights. See who’s at the front door. All without having to ask, “where’s the remote control?” That’s the magic of hands-free voice control. Just say “Hey Google” to get started.
Pros
  • Incredible contrast and color spectrum
  • Good software
  • Low latency and low lag
Cons
  • No freesync and G-sync
  • No Apple AirPlay

This class 6 series from TCL caters to the budget segment of high-resolution TV sets.

While yes, the top and mid-range TV sets are well worth their price, that doesn’t mean you need to spend as much to have an incredible gaming experience.

This TCL TV offers stunning visuals over a 55-inch QLED display on which you can enjoy 4K 120Hz while gaming.

The mini LEDs on the panel do an excellent task of making the visuals crisp, and bright with superb contrast.

I really wish the TV offered Freesync or G-Sync but it does offer VRR which helps prevent tearing.

The auto game is a neat feature to have where the TV detects consoles to ensure smooth gameplay, low latency, and optimal picture settings.

5. TCL 50’’ Class 5 Series 4K QLED

Best Budget 4k 60Hz TV for PS5

TCL 50" Class 5-Series 4K QLED Dolby Vision HDR Smart Google TV - 50S546, 2022 Model,Black
  • Superior 4K Ultra HD: Picture clarity combined with the contrast, color, and detail of Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the most lifelike picture.Controller type:Remote Control.Standby Power :<0.5 watts
  • QLED: Quantum dot technology delivers more than a billion colors with greater accuracy, better brightness, and wider color volume, matching the format used by most cinema screens and Hollywood content creators. This provides exceptionally vivid and lifelike picture performance.
  • Contrast Control Zones: Contrast is optimized across up to 60 localized zones for striking distinction between bright and dark areas of the image for maximum detail, depth, and dimension.
  • Hands-free Voice Control: Easy home control and entertainment, without lifting a finger. Turn on the big game. Dim the lights. See who’s at the front door. All without having to ask, “where’s the remote control.” That’s the magic of hands-free voice control. Just say “Hey Google” to get started.
  • What you want to watch, all in one place: Choose from 700,000 plus movies and shows from across your favorite apps, intelligently organized just for you. Tune into live shows, curate watchlists, and get recommendations based on what you have watched and what interests you. Finding what to watch has never been easier with TCL Google TV.
Pros
  • Good VA panel with a high contrast ratio
  • Great visuals at 4K gaming and content
  • Good brightness in SDR
  • Very good response times
  • Low latency
Cons
  • Local dimming may lead to blooming
  • Viewing angles a bit too narrow
  • Fails to properly upscale 480p content.

While class 6 is the best budget option for a 4K 120Hz TV, if you are okay going 60Hz, you can again save a lot by going with TCL 5 Series/S546 QLED.

It’s an incredible TV packed with good features when you look at it from the perspective of gaming.

It comes with a variable refresh rate which prevents tearing during gameplay.

Couple variable refresh rates with low input lag and incredible response times and you can’t wish for a better TV for a PS5 at the budget it comes at.

For those curious about the picture quality, the panel relays deep blacks thanks to its high native contrast ratio.

It doesn’t have the best color accuracy but it makes up for it with performance. If you don’t want to sacrifice the overall picture quality you can also take a look atHisense ULED 4K Premium 50U6G Quantum Dot QLED Series 50-Inch Android 4K Smart TV with Alexa Compatibility, 600-nit HDR10+, Dolby Vision & Atmos, Voice Remote (2021 Model).

The only caveat is it doesn’t support VRR, so the gaming experience won’t be as smooth.

6. Insignia 50-inch Class F50 Series

Best Cheap 4k TV for PS5

INSIGNIA 50-inch Class F50 Series Smart 4K UHD QLED Fire TV (NS-50F501NA22, 2021 Model)
  • QLED Screen: Quantum Dot technology produces heavily saturated and precisely defined colors, granting you vivid pictures with intense colors.
  • 4K Ultra HD (2160p resolution): Enjoy breathtaking HDR10 4K movies and TV shows at 4 times the resolution of Full HD, and upscale your current content to Ultra HD-level picture quality.
  • Alexa voice control: The Alexa Voice Remote lets you easily control your entertainment, search across apps, switch inputs, and more using just your voice. Press and hold the voice button and ask Alexa to easily find, launch, and control content, and even switch to cable.
  • Access thousands of shows with Fire TV: Watch over 1 million streaming movies and TV episodes with access to thousands of channels, apps and Alexa skills, including Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, YouTube, Apple TV+, Disney+, ESPN+, Sling TV, Paramount+, and other services right from this TV.*
  • Narrow bezel:Sleek design elevates your entertainment experience by centering your focus on the screen.
Pros
  • Excellent contrast ratio
  • Good software with a great selection of apps
  • Good reflection handling
  • Budget-friendly
Cons
  • No visible benefit over SDR gaming
  • Image degradation at an angle

If you are looking for an ultra-budget TV set to just get going, the best option is the Insignia F50 QLED.

The biggest advantage of course is the 4K native resolution.

For obvious reasons, you won’t be getting advanced gaming features of the kind you saw in the expensive options above.

That being said the TV does actually give a very decent gaming experience with good response times and incredibly low input lag

What you do miss out on, are features like variable refresh rates and support for HDMI 2.1 bandwidth.

As far as visuals go, the contrast is actually excellent which was something I was not expecting given the price point.

Peak brightness is decent, and the accuracy is great but as is expected from an ultra-budget TV the image processing is limited.

The lack of a local dimming feature means you won’t go too bright in HDR, so HDR gaming won’t be too distinct from SDR.

Is 8K TV worth it for PS5?

So, now that we have seen the best 4K TVs for PS5, let me answer the big question, quite literally, should you go 8k for PS5?

The answer is for the majority of use cases and given where we are at you really don’t need to go 8k unless you have a very good reason for it. Taking into account game optimizations, the cost of 8K TVs, and the overall gaming experience, PS5 peaks at 4K.

As I said earlier in this article, you are definitely underutilizing your PS5 if you are driving a 720p or even a 1080p monitor/TV using it.

While a PS5 can drive 8K visual devices, it doesn’t mean you should invest in one. The PS5 gaming experience peaks at 4k and you start seeing diminishing returns if you go higher.

Now if you want an 8k TV for reasons apart from gaming, like for entertainment or building a home theater, then it’s a completely different story.

But you need to know most games aren’t optimized to run at 8K (AAA games certainly not), not to mention the extra excess gruntwork that the GPU will have to do to push 8K.

I have not seen it happening, but experiencing heating issues may become a thing.

So, if budget is not an issue try and hit that 4K/120Hz mark.

Conclusion,

PS5 is without a doubt one of the most well-received consoles in recent gaming history.

The hardware, the design, the resolution it can easily game at, and the PS5 exclusives alone make it one of the most sought consoles.

Its success can be perceived from the fact that even after almost 3 years of its release people still wait and hunt for the console whenever they can manage it.

While yes, there are reasons like chip shortages, pandemic and cryptocurrency behind the continuous short stocks. But the fact that people aren’t ready to move on from it gives you a great idea about its reception and success.

So, yeah, in order to experience the best a PS5 can offer a 4K/120Hz is the perfect choice.

All you need to do now is lock onto a budget and pick one out of the 6 TVs that I have suggested above.

By no means are these the only viable TVs out there but from the perspective of gaming experience, these are definitely among the top ones.

Here are the choices once again for you to choose from.
